If I give a 30 day notice to my landlord on the 7th of March, can I leave on April 1st? or do I have to pay?

You are not giving the landlord 30 days. Talk to him, and see if he will work with you, but if he has other rentals it would not be fair to the other tenants that he would give you a break.
