How to use hayward filter for above-ground pool?

I have the hayward S166T sand filter. I set it to "filter" to filter the pool, but all this water is flowing out the bottom of the machine. Is that supposed to happen or did I connect something wrong? I have the owner's guide, but it is very confusing. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
